Useful Evidence From Queen Victoria No Less, May Add Credence To The Claim?
1899 PANNANICH WELLS (SPRING), SOUTH DEESIDE ROAD, Nr BALLATER, ROYAL DEESIDE APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE EAST OF THE MACKENZIE MEMORIAL SEAT.
This well (spring) was extremely important to the village of Ballater, the water it produced was considered to have many healing and health enhancing properties and brought many people to the area to sample its health giving advantages.
Queen Victoria wrote the following in her "Journal Of A Life In The Highlands"............
3 Oct. 1870- the day of the Princess Louise's betrothal to the Marquis of Lorne-the Queen writes in More Leaves from the Journal of a Life in the Highlands (1884)- "I had driven with Beatrice to Pannanich Wells, where I had been many years ago. Unfortunately almost all the trees which covered the hills have been cut down. We got out and tasted the water, which is strongly impregnated with iron, and looked at the bath and at the humble but very clean accommodation in the curious little old inn, which used to be very much frequented. Brown formerly stayed here for a year as servant, and then quantities of horses and goats were there.' Mr Mackenzie of Glenmuick has greatly improved the accommodation for visitors to the wells." 1870.

14-09-14: Item found whilst work being carried out by the team, exactly 4inches long, thought to be a drill/punch used on the original memorial in 1906 possibly to mark out the lettering on the main stone ready for the lead to be inserted. Now in the safe keeping of the Ballater History Group.

Local Directions To The Mackenzie 'Come & Rest' Memorial Seat:
Leave Ballater Village via the Royal Bridge ( Bridge Street, A93), at end of bridge cross the B976 road and immediately ahead follow the right hand footpath as in above picture. The Memorial is a mere 250 metres from here, gentle climb for around 150 metres then evens out.
